3 Full Day Basic and Advanced Training Course

The Training Course is aimed at physicians, physical therapists and other professionals working in the field of infant neurology. This assessment method has shown its merit for the prenatal and postnatal evaluation of the integrity of the nervous system. Compelling evidence is now available that qualitative assessment of General Movements (GMs) at a very early age is the best predictor for cerebral palsy. This method has become a potent supplement to the traditional kind of neurological examination.

The course fulfills the standards specified by the GM-Trust, and will be conducted by Dr. Giovanni Cioni (advanced course), Dr. Colleen Peyton (basic course), and Dr. Alicia Spittle (basic course).

19.25 category I CME credits and 19 CEU credits will be available upon completion of the three day course.

Nationwide Children's Hospital 700 Children's Drive, Columbus OH 43205
Meeting Room: TBD
Date: Sunday April 8th - Tuesday April 10th, 2018
Time: 8:00am - 5pm

Light Breakfast and lunch included.

Basic Course

Main topics of lectures, demonstrations and exercises are:

  • The ontogeny of spontaneous motor activity;
  • Normal and abnormal GMs from birth to 20 weeks post-term;
  • Practical instructions for recording and assessment of GMs;
  • GMs and follow-up: individual developmental trajectories and their predictive power for later neurological impairments.

Advanced Course

Participation is possible only for individuals who successfully passed a Basic Training Course held under the auspices of the GM-Trust. We recommend individuals have extensive experience in using GMAs in research or clinical practice.

The Advanced Course will provide an additional intensive training in correct judgement. This training will deal with the details of the assessment, the proper terminology and technique as well as with the application of individual developmental trajectories.

Each participant should bring GMs videos to review as a group. It is helpful to have a trajectory of videos, the gestation age of the baby at birth, any significant history, PMA at the video time point, and the outcome if available. However, single videos with just the age at video are also welcome. Names should not be visible and videos should be on flash drives/external hard drive storage.

More information will be circulated closer to the time of the course.
